A Lesson Served with Love

This Christmas, I decided to host dinner for my son John and his new wife, Liz. It was my first big gathering since losing my husband, and I wanted it to be special. I woke up early, pouring my heart into every dish.

When Liz walked in, instead of appreciating the effort, she wrinkled her nose and said, “We should just order out. Not everyone’s into what you’ve made.” Her words stung, and John stayed silent.

Dinner was awkward, but I kept my composure. When dessert came, I handed Liz a slice and said with a smile, “You’re right, Liz. Not everyone appreciates good food—this might be too much effort for some.” The room went silent, and Liz turned red.

Later, John hugged me and whispered, “Thanks, Mom. Dinner was perfect.” That night, I learned that kindness, with a pinch of sass, can leave a lasting impression.
