Live updates: Powerful earthquake causes tsunami warnings for Northern California
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off Humboldt County’s coast Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning from Oregon to north of Santa Cruz. Despite the intense quake, initial reports indicated no major damage in the sparsely populated northern coastline.
Rio Anderson, co-owner of Chautauqua Natural Foods in Garberville, described it as one of the most intense earthquakes he’s experienced in 40 years. His store, 50 miles inland, saw items fall from shelves and minor stucco cracking, but no injuries or significant damage occurred. “So far so good,” he said, heading to pick up his kids from school.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake hit at 10:44 a.m., centered 10 miles southwest of Scotia, with aftershocks of 4.2 and 3.3 magnitudes soon after. The Bay Area Rapid Transit system’s Transbay tube was briefly closed. Officials warned of potential tsunami-induced flooding and powerful currents lasting hours.
