My Daughter Chose Her Wealthy Father over Me; Now, at 21, He Has Kicked Her Out

A mother shared her story on Reddit, opening up about the challenges she faced with her daughter, Maria, after her divorce. When Maria was ten, her parents separated, and Maria’s mother, a stay-at-home mom, found herself struggling financially. Although she was awarded the family home in the divorce, making ends meet was difficult until she eventually found a stable job in her field. Despite her newfound stability, the mother couldn’t afford to provide a lavish lifestyle for her daughter.

Maria’s father, however, had no financial issues and showered her with expensive gifts, making sure she lived comfortably. Over the years, this disparity in lifestyles created a rift in the mother-daughter relationship. Maria grew accustomed to the luxuries her father provided, and it made her resent her mother’s more modest way of life.

When Maria turned 17, things reached a boiling point. She started to prefer her father’s lifestyle and even told her mother that he was the “better” parent because he could afford things like a $1,000 laptop, which her mother could not. The two argued frequently, and eventually, Maria decided to drop out of high school, saying it was her life and she could make her own choices. This disagreement ended with Maria choosing to live with her father full-time, telling her mother she didn’t consider her a “real mom” anymore.

Years passed without any contact, despite her mother’s attempts to reconnect. But when Maria turned 21, things took an unexpected turn. Her father remarried, and shortly after, Maria found herself kicked out of his home. With nowhere else to go, Maria reached out to her mother, hoping to move back in.

Although the mother was open to letting Maria return, she felt it was necessary to set conditions to ensure a more stable and responsible future for her daughter. She told Maria she would have to meet certain requirements to live together again: earn her GED, work at least 25 hours a week, plan for her career, buy her own personal items, and help with household chores. Maria wouldn’t need to pay rent, but her mother didn’t want her partying every night either, allowing her to have fun only on the weekends.

Maria was upset by these terms and accused her mother of being unreasonable and a “horrible” parent. Frustrated, she walked out. Later, the mother shared her story on Reddit, seeking advice and support. Many commenters empathized with her, suggesting her conditions were fair and in Maria’s best interest as a young adult. They pointed out that Maria seemed more interested in taking advantage of her mother’s help rather than truly reconnecting.
