I Was Curious Why My Parents Kept an Old Videotape in the Safe until I Saw What Was on It — Story of the Day
When helping her estranged mother pack, Lucy finds a cryptic note: “Do not show Lucy.” Her curiosity leads her to a dusty videotape hidden in a safe.
Tension fills the car as she and her father, Todd, drive to her mother’s house. Lucy resents the reunion, still bitter over their broken relationship. At the house, she packs methodically until she spots the note at the bottom of the list. Defying the warning, she opens the safe and discovers the videotape.
Later, alone at home, she plays it. Grainy footage flickers to life—her parents, happy and young, calling out to a little girl. But they call her Chloe.
Lucy’s heart pounds. Who is Chloe? Her parents only had one child—her.
Needing answers, she rushes to the nursing home. Her mother, Emma, is stunned but emotional when Lucy confronts her with the tape. “Chloe was our first daughter,” she confesses, her voice breaking. “She died in an accident. We adopted you and never told you.”
Lucy reels from the revelation, but as she sees her mother’s tearful face, resentment melts away. She embraces her for the first time in years.
“You’re my mom. That’s all that matters,” she whispers, finally feeling free.
