I Cooked a Festive Dinner for 20 People for My Husband’s Birthday — Then He Ditched Me to Celebrate at a Bar
I thought I was being a good wife, throwing a classy dinner for Todd’s 35th birthday. But just before guests arrived, he announced he was ditching the party to watch a game at the bar. That was the last straw.
For years, Todd took my efforts for granted. Last Thanksgiving, he suggested hosting both our families but left me to do all the work. He took credit for the meal after carrying in a cooler of beer. On his last birthday, I made a heartfelt photo album, and he dismissed it, asking, “Where’s the real gift?” This year, he demanded a “proper dinner” but did nothing to help.
Despite his selfishness, I went all out. The house was spotless, the table was beautifully set, and the food was gourmet. But then Todd casually told me to cancel everything because he was heading to the bar. Furious but determined, I packed up the food, redirected the guests to the bar, and turned his night into a spectacle.
I set up the feast in full view of Todd and his friends. When our families arrived, I explained the situation, and everyone joined in. The pièce de résistance was a cake reading, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SELFISH HUSBAND!” The bar erupted in laughter, leaving Todd mortified.
Since that night, Todd’s attitude has shifted. While he hasn’t outright apologized, he’s been more respectful. I learned I’m done tolerating his entitlement. If nothing else, he now knows who he’s dealing with.
