FOR 30 YEARS, I BELIEVED I WAS ADOPTED

I grew up thinking I was adopted—my dad told me so since I was three, after my adoptive mom died. He often reminded me I wasn’t “really his,” took me to orphanages to show me how “lucky” I was, and let kids tease me as the “orphan girl.” For 30 years, I felt unwanted. Then my fiancé, Matt, urged me to dig into my past. At the orphanage, they had no record of me. Confronting my dad, he admitted: “You were never adopted. You’re my biological daughter.” He’d lied after my mom’s death, thinking it’d be easier. I was furious, betrayed—but also relieved. I wasn’t an orphan. I left with Matt, unsure if I’d forgive Dad, but finally knowing the truth.
