US: Dramatic Aerial Video Shows Lava Fountaining in Kīlauea’s Summit Caldera

Hawaii, USA – December 24, 2024 Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park – A stunning aerial video, captured during a USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory monitoring flight at 2:30 p.m. HST on December 23, reveals powerful lava fountaining in the southwest part of Kaluapele (Kīlauea summit caldera). The eruption, which began earlier that day, has already covered approximately 650 acres of the caldera floor with flowing lava. The ongoing eruption is being closely monitored as it continues to reshape the landscape.
