The Last Lesson
My elderly neighbor was a strong, independent woman who had raised her grandson all on her own. She adored him and sacrificed much to give him a good life. But as he grew older, he became distant, eventually moving to another city and cutting off contact. She was heartbroken but determined to teach him a lesson he would never forget.
One day, she handed me a small, sealed envelope and said, “When I’m gone, put this in my urn and give it to my grandson. He’ll understand.” I didn’t fully grasp her intentions, but I agreed. A week later, she passed away, and true to form, her grandson didn’t even show up at the funeral.
Respecting her last wish, I traveled to the city where he lived to hand over the urn with the envelope inside. I told him that this was something his grandmother wanted him to have, hoping he’d feel some remorse. He took it casually, hardly reacting, and I left, feeling disappointed.
But a few days later, I was jolted awake by frantic knocking at my door. I opened it to find her grandson, trembling, tears streaming down his face. He looked terrified. “Please, help me! She’s haunting me! Every night, I hear her voice, and I can’t sleep. She keeps saying she’s disappointed in me.”
Whatever his grandmother had put in that urn had stirred something deep in him, something no one else could reach. Her last lesson had found its mark, and her grandson finally understood just how much he’d lost by abandoning her.
